Ludo, a former professional Quidditch player and current leader of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, has been forced into hiding and his new game, Muggle Quidditch 2.0 is in danger. It seems that goblins, possibly those behind Gringotts Wizarding Bank, are after Ludo for a "small financial miscommunication" and the Ministry has shut down Muggle Quidditch 2.0. Ludo thinks the two are connected and that wizards are influencing the goblins. To make things more complicated,... NEWSFLASH: "Major" Charlie Higson and James Bond are Not Dead - For followers of The Shadow War alternate reality game, the success and excitement generated by the experience might convince them that The Shadow War was the game with the golden gun. Charlie Higson, the author of the Young Bond series, kicked off the alternate reality game with a little help from Six to Start at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, launching the main game website YoungBond.com. The first mission went live on August 27, and players were taken on a worldly, online adventure that spanned seven missions.

You're going to have to tell the kiddies trick-or-treating is cancelled this year. Something much more interesting is happening this Halloween in New York City. Prototype161 is planning a live scavenger hunt game on October 31st called Mare Vitreum.
Mare Vitreum is a dangerous doomsday cult that has been recruiting its members by sending out etched pieces of glass in the mail. In response, prototype161 wants agents to infiltrate the cult and foil its Hallow's Eve plans in New York City.

When I heard DIY Days was coming to Boston, mostly I was looking forward to reconnecting with filmmaker, Alternate Reality Game enthusiast and ARGFest Boston speaker, Lance Weiler, (Hope is Missing and Beyond the Rave) and maybe getting a scoop on his next project. While I did get to do all that, I also got to meet some incredibly talented independent filmmakers, culture researchers, and writers, and participate in a great discussion not only about independent filmmaking, but also about the future of media and technology.... ... Update: I am Blind sends us shades, mystery in a box - So, remember that strange call we got on the ARGNet voicemail three weeks ago? You know, the one we couldn't figure out at first? Well, it's a good thing we figured it out, because it turns out to be a game for the newly-released film Blindness, and after we sent in our snail mail address, we're happy to have a nifty little bit of game swag in our hands.
Included in the package was two pairs of the cheapest sunglasses we've ever seen -- no frames, even! -- along with a card with "i am blind' and "IAMBL" written in Braille. There was even a self-addressed stamped envelope for a P.O. Box in Toluca Lak... Voices in the Static - About a month ago, a series of strange emails originating from voicesinthestatic.com made their rounds across the Internet. When arriving at the site, titled 'stare into us', players are greeted by a wall of static, akin to what one would see on a television without rabbit ears or cable, and the sound of white noise interlaced with strange music. A quick view of the source code reveals that the owners of the site are "the taste of your fear the taste of fear like metal" and gives players three more parts of the site to check out.
So far, players have enjoyed the campaign, which updates regularly. The story revolves around three main characters, 'spirits' who are communicating from beyo... The 14th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition - Take lamp. Open mailbox. Get ye flask. Ah, the simple pleasure of the text adventure game. For those out there old enough to remember and enjoy such classics as Zork and the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Infocom game, we have a treat for you. IFComp 2008, otherwise known as the 14th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition is in full swing, and you have the chance to vote for the winner.
According to the web site, the IFComp is "a chance to enjoy some of the best short adventure games available anywhere." The games are available as a ... Game Launch: Love Resurrected - As far as web sites go, Love Resurrected isn't the most flashy, nor is it the most intriguing. But there's something about a site that asks for your phone number that grabs our attention, and coupled with the fact that this apparent alternate reality game was brought to our attention by a very reputable and trustworthy source, we'll bite. Earlier today, Steve Peters (ARGNet's original owner, currently with 42 Entertainment) posted the link to the web site to his Twitter micro-blog stream, and quickly, members of the ARG community have found a wealth of information.

Traces of Hope: British Red Cross Launches ARG for Civilians and Conflict Month - Registration opened today for Traces of Hope, an alternate reality game sponsored by the British Red Cross. According to a press release we received last week, the game is "an experience in which on-screen characters reach out into the players' real world." The story will revolve around Joseph, a Ugandan teenager searching for his mother during a time of civil war. The experience will combine "storytelling, detective work, technology and treasure-hunt style gameplay in a compelling 21st century narrative, as players seek to reunite Joseph with his mother." As Joseph arrives at the IDP camp, the game will focus on how the Red Cross' tracing and messaging service offers the "last traces of hope"... A possible alternate reality game to coincide with the release of Amanda Palmer's new solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer? has recently popped up on ARG players' collective radar. Operation Sleeper Cell: Making the World a Lovelier Place - A few months ago, Adrian Hon gathered together a collection of ARG developers with the battle cry, Let's Change the Game. In collaboration with Cancer Research UK, aspiring game developers were challenged to create an alternate reality game to serve as a fundraiser for a worthy cause: the fight to cure cancer. The winning team would receive £1300 ($2600USD) seed money to develop a campaign that would be promoted through the Cancer Research UK website, 600 plus stores, mailings to over 20 million people, TV ads, a dedicated island on Second Life, and hundreds of live events and races across the country.
